Upper stem leaves sessile, lower petioled (no leaves including petiole >3cm), leaf bases subcordate, rhizomes (and a small tuber) present.
This plant was found growing in part sun, fine sandy loam soil off the north side of the "South Fenceline Trail" a bit east of the first house and at the western edge of the Pine Pond Fire scar. A mix of live and dead Loblolly Pines (Pinus taeda) are present. Other associated plants: Astranthium ciliatum, Krigia occidentalis, Agrostis hyemalis, Ilex vomitoria.
A few plants are growing in full sun, scattered about in an opening about midway along the "South Fenceline Trail" (adjacent to the second house). Soil is fine sandy loam. Formerly a stand of mature Loblolly Pines, the area was severely burned in the Pine Pond Fire in 2022. Multiple standing dead trees are around, and many trees near the trail were recently cut and cleared. Associated plants: Gamochaeta pensylvanica, Baccharis neglecta, Agrostis hyemalis, Dichanthelium sp., Phytolacca americana, Carex muhlenbergii, Juncus dichotomus, Scleria ciliata.
