Growing in clusters from soil inside of a burned-out ponderosa stump surrounded by deep snow. One older cluster next to a couple of apparently fresh specimens. Caps 6-7cm in diameter, stipes measuring approx. 7-8cm in length and up to 1cm thick. Chocolate brown spores. Very faint remnants of a Cortina along the stipe. Hollow stipe that is orange at the base and more yellow towards the apex with bright yellow scales along the length of the stipe. Smooth broadly convex reddish brown cap with a deep gill layer. Thin context and slightly tacky pellicle that peels away from the cap easily. Yellow/brownish flesh that stains red in KOH on both cap and stipe. Very mild, fresh flavor. Ponderosa Pine/Cypress habitat approx. 7,100ft.
