On Trichaptum abietinum, on snag.
Uncertain about this and will need to consult with Selva. At first I thought it was a phaeocalicium but spores suggest otherwise and are around 3.7 um wide, globose and dull coloured (greenish/brown). Substrate is a trichaptum sp.
Brodo’s key took me no where, same with lichens of British isles and Selva’s key.
Using lichens of PNW by Bruce McCune my closest match is C. balsamconensis. Overall the fit is good but not recorded in NS and capitulum isn’t as brown as it usually is.
EDIT: Troy McMullin confirmed this species.
In cedar/mixed swamp. Aside from cedar, Picea glauca, Pinus strobus, Abies balsamea, Fraxinus nigra, Betula alleghaniensis, Acer spicatum and Acer freemanii also present.
not sure if it was always black, or had turned that colour
