Sonchus asper vs oleraceus vs tenerrimus (and vs arvensis) (ENG/ITA)

Sonchus species growing in anthropic habitats, despite being usually very common, can sometimes present some difficulties for their identification, especially if photographed without showing the diagnostic characters.
So, in order to avoid that a plant will remain unidentified at the species level and that some users may raise doubts even when the overall appearance leads to a certain identification, it would be recommended to take care to photograph the diagnostic characters when it is known that the plant in hand is a Sonchus.

Here it is a key for four species that does not take into account the achenes as a diagnostic character:

1 - Basal auricles of the cauline leaves strongly bent downwards or forwards in comparison to the plane of the leaf. Teeth on leaves margins stiff: S. asper
1a - Basal auricles of cauline leaves more or less straight and pointing backwards or slightly bent downwards in comparison to the plane of the leaf. Teeth on leaves margins soft: 2
2 - Leaves always divided. Leaf lobes often linear to filiform or, alternatively, if broader, strongly narrowed at base and almost petiolulate. Petiole of cauline leaves not or narrowly winged. Ligules all golden yellow, the outer ones at least twice as long as phyllaries: S. tenerrimus
2a - Leaves divided or entire. If cauline leaves are divided, leaf lobes are not linear/filiform nor narrowed at base (rarely slightly narrowed at base) and then not petiolulate. Petiole of cauline leaves, if present, broadly winged. Ligules all golden yellow or the outer ones whitish, the outer ones from less than twice as long as phyllaries to more than twice as long as phyllaries: 3
3 - Stigma greenish. Outer ligules often whitish: S. oleraceus
3a - Stigma golden yellow. All ligules always golden yellow: S. arvensis

In summary, in order to achieve a reliable identification of a Sonchus belonging to the asper-oleraceous complex, it is recommended to post photos that depict the base of the cauline leaves, the petiole if present and the overall shape of cauline leaves.
