Catfish!

I got tired of being stuck in my apartment and braved fishing in the rain after dinner. I went to a creek in one of the city parks to continue my quest to document as many species in Gregg County as I can. There are allegedly 76 species, but many of them haven't been documented in decades. I know there are some rare ones I'm not going to find, like the American Eel, but I want to document which ones are still here.

I had less than an hour of fishing time today, but I got a new species, the Yellow Bullhead; I have now found both native bullheads. This was in a creek the locals say has no fish in it. ;p I think they mean there are no fish big enough to eat, which is true because the creek is small.

I really want to find some that are east Texas exclusives, like the Sabine Shiner. It's not supposed to rain tomorrow, so the quest will continue!

A cool new spot

I didn't find any new species for Gregg County today, but I found a cool new fishing spot on one of the local creeks. The parts of this creek I've hiked so far have a clay bottom, but I found a section with a rocky bottom; it has a short rapids section that ends in a pond. I thought that since this part of the creek is different, it might have different species. I found two Largemouth Bass and a 14" Channel Catfish in the rapids section, and more catfish in the pond. Then I ran out of bait! :-(

I'll go back to this spot later. I'm hoping to find new microspecies, but I didn't see any.

On Google Maps, I found a park recently bought by one of the local megachurches that has two lakes surrounded by a biking/walking trail. Fortunately, it's open to public. http://www.mobberly.org/story_article/mobberlys_williams_lake

I really want to fish this lake this week!

Tyler State Park Bioblitz

For the Texas Pollinator Bioblitz, Tyler State Park will be holding their own event Saturday, October 6th at 2pm. From TPWD website:

"Discover the explosion of color in the Post oak savannah as prairie and woodland wildflowers bloom. We will also see colorful pollinators and the equally colorful predators that hunt them. Dress for the weather and be ready for a short walk. Meet at the Blackjack Nature Trail."

That next Monday afternoon I will probably be at Caddo Lake WMA.

Sometime during the Bioblitz, I want to visit Kilgore's new park, Creekside Trail. http://www.kilgorenewsherald.com/stories/creekside-trail,129126

From photos of the new trail I've seen, it looks like there are large fields at the Dudley Road entrance which should contain a lot of pollinators. Since the trail runs along a creek, I'll briefly check it for fish for a future trip.
