on sunlit edge of dense patch of young trees to c. 3m H, mostly mapou uder taller young totara, with manuka, akeake, karamu, ti kouka

This bank is at the top of a dry (deforested) kauri ridge with regen forest lower down the ridge, from 10m behind the camera. This part of the ridgetop is particularly dry, and the area seen here is exposed to afternoon sun. Even the benign exotic herbs, being retained throughout this manual restorationsite, did not prosper over the following two years, though karamu are gradually extending their shade towards the camera, and many young wild karamu have arisen behind the camera, where mowing of exotic grasses was suspended in June 2018 and at the time of this photograph the grasses were suppressed with pampas mulch.

behind the pampas (which has been manually reduced since June 2018, and at time of upload in June 2021 is entirely dead)

The manuka has/had a low branch which was live prior to reduction of the pampas. Removal of a pile of dead pampas sheaves over 1m H led to the collaps of the low manuka branch, which was already cracked near the base. That manuka tree died within a year, and the space is in June 2021 fully occupied by the Coprosma robusta rooted closely beside the manuka.

Eastern margin and Southern corner of a c. 10 m x 150 m strip of younger growth, ? 15-20yrs since cessation of mowing of wild grasses following agriculture/forestry/burnoffs.

From 10m to the right the regen is older, rawirinui dominant, with scattered podocarps to c.10 H

In the background (West) the forest is older still, with more large podocarps incl. some kauri

on left is karamu "karFTZ2", an apparently healthy but mostly semi prostrate tree that was released from almost complete cover by honeysuckle in June 2018. It leafed and branched out on release, the kikuyu received a heavy dose of herbixcide here for some reason in the following months, which led into prolonged and severe drought. The tree died thereafter, along with the one behind it to its right, and another out of shot to right.

See observation group for the little mapou against the trunk of the manuka, which in June 2021 is about 2m H and succeeding the manuka, which was dead in the centre on release from the heavy mass of honeysuckle that covered it.

It flowered in 2019/20 and is male.

This area has been manually weeded of honeysuckle, not vbery dense here but affecrting the canopy of many of these trees (some dead honeysuckle visible in mapou in foreground), and a bit of ivy on the ground here.

Clay at left is bared and rutted by pedestrian access to Reserve. It will not be supported with woodchip mulch, steps or other treatments as it is not a formal path.
