Welcome!

". . . you demi-puppets that
By moonshine do the green, sour ringlets make,
Whereof the ewe not bites; and you whose pastime
Is to make midnight mushrumps, that rejoice
To hear the solemn curfew . . ."

  • The Bard

“Thus always does history, whether of marsh or marketplace, end in paradox. The ultimate value in these marshes is wildness . . . but all conservation of wildness is self defeating, for to cherish we must see and fondle, and when enough have seen and fondled, there is no wilderness left to cherish.”

  • Aldo Leopold, “Wisconsin Marshland Elegy”

The dilemma for us as scientists, whether as citizen scientists or professionals, is that to fully understand something we must “take it apart.” But there is a growing awareness that as our numbers increase, anything that we do in great numbers has a lasting and sometimes irreversible impact. I try to remain aware of this as I delve into the last remaining patches of wilderness. If I can examine or study something without disrupting it or by minimizing that disruption, then I have contributed to its conservation.

I'm a physicist with a deep love of art and the natural world.

My profile picture is a running coyote that I photographed on Antelope Island, Utah in 2019.

Thank you for your interest and assistance!
