My first forays into natural history were in 1970, at age 5, with the Norfolk Natural History Society in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. I have been an avid amateur since that time, focused mostly on birds. For 20 years, I was editor of the journal North American Birds and have contributed 100+ articles on the subject of bird distribution over the years. I put together a field guide to North American birds for National Wildlife Federation in 2007 and also in that year a book (with Steve Rottenborn) on the status and distribution of birds in my home state of Virginia. I'm strictly an amateur at non-birds and enjoy the guidance of other naturalists here. I have good familiarity with cetaceans from having spent many hours at sea, mostly in the North Atlantic.
