I served in the US Navy from 1955-1959.
I received a BS in Zoology/Geology from the University of Wyoming In 1965, then a PhD in Oceanography from Texas A&M University in 1968.
I taught biology at Jacksonville University, Florida from 1968-1969.
From 1969 to1995 I was a Biological Oceanographer with the Texas A&M University Dept. of Oceanography. My students and I pursued research in Coral Reef biology, generating much of the descriptive ecology contributing to establishment of the FLOWER GARDEN BANKS NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (flowergarden.noaa.gov).
During 1998-2000, my wife Cindy and I served as Station Managers for the Wildlife Conservation Society, Glover's Reef Marine Station on Middle Caye, Glover's Atoll, Belize, assisting in management of the GLOVER'S REEF MARINE RESERVE (belize.wcs.org).
In past years, Cindy, and I have hosted National Forest campgrounds in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon. In 2010 we hosted campgrounds in the Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado. From 2011-14 we hosted Cape Perpetua Campground, on the Oregon coast. Later, we managed Sam Owen Campground on Lake Pend Oreille and then hosted Beaver Creek Campground on Priest Lake, both in north Idaho. To assist campers and visitors in recognizing local plants and animals, we created picture guides to creatures inhabiting the campgrounds and vicinity. These guides and others can be downloaded free at (campgroundcritters.com).
Cindy and I live in Sagle, Idaho.
