Projects

Collection Project:
A Collection Project automatically draws in observations that meet a certain criterion.
For example:
Birds of the World [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/birds-of-the-world] collects any observation of a bird from anywhere in the world.
Bird hides in the Southern Cape (South Africa) [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/bird-hides-in-the-southern-cape-south-africa] only collects observations from bird hides where specific places have been created.
You do not have to join this kind of project for your observation to be included. It will automatically be done. But if you are not a member of the project then it will not display on your observation that it is included.

Umbrella Project:
An Umbrella Project is a collection of different projects. Like a directory it lists individual projects which fit into a theme.
For example:
NEMBA Alien Species (South Africa) [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/nemba-alien-species-south-africa] includes 13 individual projects that all relate to invasive or prohibited species in South Africa.
You do not have to join this kind of project for your observation to be included. It will automatically be done. But if you are not a member of the project then it will not display on your observation that it is included.

Traditional Project:
A Traditional Project collects specific information that you feel is relating to a specific theme.
For example:
George Municipality Urban Edge [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/george-municipality-urban-edge] only wants observations of trees planted on road verges in a given area.
For this type of project to work you need to join the project, then while uploading the observation add the observation to the project. It will then be included and visible in the project.

Well, well, well.

We now have an additional 2 weeks of peace and quiet at home. Lockdown extended to 30 April which effectively prevents us from scouring the mountains, oceans and everything in between for anything to take a picture of.

This does not mean that the project will be closing. We may not be able to take 100’s or 1000’s of observations, but we can still do what we can in our confined areas.

The City Nature Challenge 2020: Garden Route is not going ahead as a challenge but will be as an activity.

There are 2 projects running concurrently that you can participate in.

https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/garden-route-south-africa-lockdown

Join us on our venture to the 2021 challenge.

Enjoy and be safe

Cape Town challenge to Garden Route

Cape Town has thrown down the gauntlet and are trying to catch up to the Garden Route Lockdown challenge.

Quote from email “Please help us to get on top of Garden Route! Cape Town wants to be tops.” And they say all we have is “energy and enthusiasm”.

Is the Garden Route really going to sit back and let them take the laurels?
We have the will; we have the dedicated people and we have the diversity. All they have is a mountain.
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/garden-route-south-africa-lockdown

And in one week from today the City Nature Challenge will start. And I bet Cape Town will try to get on top again.

Is the Garden Route City Nature Challenge 2020 going on?

The City Nature Challenge is still on – in true lockdown fashion. Everything in and around your home and the terrain you are safely allowed to be on can be recorded. From the moth on the lampshade, the spider on the bedroom ceiling, the little mouse in the pantry, geckos on the stoep wall, granny’s pride - the potted fern and the woodlice under its drip tray – plus all the birds, bees plants and other creatures outside. Have a look at all the great ways to attract and record insects easily at your home - Bioblitzing Goggos: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2020-cape-town/journal/33098

Actually, this City Nature Challenge is incredibly important. As humans are sequestered, one can get an idea for the very first-time what life in the vicinity of a 2020 looks like when it comes to Mother Nature. What we allow and prefer in our spaces. What we have removed and what we have lost and what we are losing – and where this is happening.

Do not miss out on this fun, incredibly stimulating experience to be part of something bigger, something positive in the world. Fun to fit all ages!

Remember that photos, sound clips and videos are uploaded onto https://www.inaturalist.org/. Check your date, time and locality settings on your equipment. Only material recorded from the Friday to the Monday in the Garden Route District Municipal area will be included in the Garden Route City Nature Challenge 2020. Wild, captive and cultivated – all acceptable as observations.

There is time to upload and identify the interesting finds until Monday, May the 3rd. You do not have to identify your observations yourself. If you are an expert in any field, now is your chance to jump in and help with identifications.

How to use iNaturalist or the iNat phone App? Online training material is available or contact Nicky and Louw (Knysna), Shaun, Colin (George) or Sandra (Mossel Bay) for trouble shooting or guidance when it comes to uploads or using the Identify Tool. Direct any queries to Christine at wessageorge@isat.co.za.

News, tips and updates are on the Facebook page, https://web.facebook.com/Garden-Route-City-Nature-Challenge-101835558021716 or the project page Garden Route City Nature Challenge.

Are you ready?

Have you planned your route from the front porch to the back yard.? Do you know where the sun will shine at what time? Have you instructed your kids and spouse to keep their eyes open and bring you anything they may find?

Time to get some gardening done with a bottle close at hand to unearth and capture those funny goggas.
Clean the gutters. Who knows what you will find there?

That wood patch. Repack and look for scorpions, cockroaches or centipedes.

Stick your lens through the fence and take photos of your street trees. Remember to add them to the Street trees of the George Municipality Urban Edge (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/street-trees-of-the-george-municipality-urban-edge).

We may be stumped and limited in our movement but let us make the most of it and learn what shares our patch of earth we call home.

Be safe and enjoy.
