Orientation for City Nature Challenge 2021: Mendocino County

Greetings Mendocino County!

A team of local nature experts from across Mendocino County will get you prepared for the City Nature Challenge on Wednesday, April 21 at 7PM via Zoom. If you simply want to learn more about Mendocino County nature, you're also welcome to join this orientation!

Mendocino County organizations participating in the City Nature Challenge include UC California Naturalist, Anderson Valley Land Trust, Grace Hudson Museum, Hopland Research & Extension Center, Latino Outdoors (through Mendocino Land Trust), Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, Mendocino County Museum, Peregrine Audubon, Point Arena Lighthouse, Redwood Coast Land Conservancy, Redwood Valley Outdoor Education Program, Sanhedrin Chapter California Native Plant Society.

Mendocino County City Nature Challenge Events

10 days until the City Nature Challenge!

The City Nature Challenge embraces the healing power of nature and celebrates tens of thousands of people all around the world, searching for and documenting their local biodiversity, together in this event. All you need to do is to take photos of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms you see in your backyard, local park, school yard, or in any urban, suburban, or rural area in Mendocino County. Or join an event listed below. Then upload your observations to iNaturalist, using the free app, so you can help us document nature in Mendocino County. Whether you spend an hour or a whole day in nature, individuals, families, and social pods will all enjoy participating in the City Nature Challenge.   • May 1, Grace Hudson Museum and Sanhedrin Chapter of the CA Native Plant Society: May Day in the Wild Gardens

  • April 30 - May 2, Mendocino County Museum: Family friendly self-guided nature themed scavenger hunt

  • April 30 - May 3, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens: Spring Blitz, a self-guided exploration of the 47 acre gardens

  • April 30-May 3, Point Arena Lighthouse: Self-guided tour of the Outdoor Museum, native gardens & coastal prairie

  • April 10 - May 1, UC Hopland Research and Extension Center: Guided family friendly social pod nature hikes

    It's Almost HERE!

    The City Nature Challenge starts in 2.5 days! What will YOU find this year?!

    As a reminder, the CNC takes place in three parts:

    April 30 - May 3: Take photos of wild plants, animals, fungi, etc. using the iNaturalist app. Join this project to see what other folks are finding! 

    May 4 - 9: Get all your photos uploaded and help us identify the Mendocino County observations in this project.

    May 10: Results announced!
