Thank You!

Thank you to all for your participation in New Jersey Audubon's BioBlitz 2022. Our species count is currently 428 and that number will continue to rise as more identifications are made and confirmed. A final summary report will be posted here in a few weeks.

The winner of the "pair of birds" challenge is seahound for their observation of a male and female Mallard. They were also able to capture two American Oystercatchers and two Great Egrets!

Thanks again for a great week of documenting and celebrating the diversity of wildlife across the state of New Jersey.

Friday: Birds

Today is the final day of our 3rd annual BioBlitz...let's finish strong! As of this morning, we have identified 358 species of plants and animals across the state...as far north as Franklin Lakes and as far south as Cape May. The winner of our "mammal in a tree" challenge is christina1222 for their observation of a cute Eastern Chipmunk gripping on to the side of a tree trunk. Other mammals observed so fare include Groundhog, White-tailed Deer, Eastern Cottontail, Eastern Gray Squirrel, and American Beaver.

Today (Friday) we are highlighting birds. New Jersey is one of the best states for birding due to our diversity of habitats and location along the Atlantic flyway. Right now, some birds in our state are continuing their migration northward while others are already nesting. Today’s BioBlitz challenge: submit an observation of a bird pair (male and female) together.

Thursday: Trees and Mammals

Thank you to all who continue to participate in our statewide BioBlitz. We have now collectively observed over 300 species!! The winner of the "animal in or under water" challenge is tinaoverman for their observation of a Northern Two-lined Salamander. Other great aquatic critter observations included a water strider by seahound and a sunfish by christina1222.

Today we are highlighting trees and mammals. Mammals and other animals may utilize different tree species as food sources and places of refuge and shelter. Today’s BioBlitz challenge: Submit an observation of a mammal in a tree.

Wednesday: Herps and Fishes

We are midway through our annual statewide BioBlitz and the amazing wildlife observations keep rolling in!

We are now up to 448 observations of 272 species. The winner of yesterday's "plant with a visible defense mechanism" challenge is NJ Audubon's very own naturalistanne. She submitted a photo of a very spiky Devil's Walking Stick. This plant provides nectar to insects and fruit to songbirds, but is highly resistant to deer due to its spiny nature.

Today (Wednesday) we are highlighting fish and herptiles (reptiles and amphibians). Many of these creatures spend all or part of their lives underwater. From lakes and rivers, to marshes and swamps, to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey is home to an abundance of aquatic habitats. Today’s BioBlitz challenge: Submit an observation of an animal (fish, herp, or other!) in or under water.

Tuesday: Flowers and Fungi

Our BilBlitz is off to a great start! As of this morning, we've observed 132 species and we are just getting started. Thank you for all of the excellent arthropod observations yesterday. The winner of the arthropod with more than six legs challenge is monarch2017 with their observation of a tan jumping spider enjoying a nice insect snack.

Please continuing submitting observations of ALL wildlife, but today we will highlight flowers and fungi. Flowers are often admired for their beauty and fragrance, but plants can also be fierce! Today’s BioBlitz challenge: Submit an observation of a plant with a visible defense mechanism.

Have fun out there!

Monday: Arthropods

Welcome to New Jersey Audubon's BioBlitz 2022! Thank you for helping us document and celebrate the diversity of wildlife across the state of New Jersey. While we encourage observations of all organisms throughout the week, certain classifications of wildlife will be highlighted each day. Today (Monday) is arthropod day. Arthropods are members of the phylum Arthropoda which includes insects, spiders, crustaceans, and horseshoe crabs. All insects have six legs, but not all arthropods do. Today’s BioBlitz challenge: Submit an observation of an arthropod with more than six legs.
