Day 3 - Birds and Data

Our focus on birds encouraged teachers to explore various habitats around NJ! Smartphone photography of birds can be a challenge so a few strategies we learned were to:

  • Go out when birds are most active (early or later in the day)
  • Visit places where birds are easily approachable (bird feeders, ponds, beach)
  • Create habitat! Put a bird bath/bird feeder in your yard
  • Learn behaviors
  • Learn calls/songs
  • Be patient

Audio recording are also an excellent way to document evidence of a bird (or frog or insect) and so teachers were challenged to record a call or song and upload it to the project.

Data crunching is an excellent way to engage students in the species they encounter in their local community (or beyond). We explored the utility of the search functions in iNaturalist and teachers created queries to answer a question of their choosing,
