Taxonomic Swap 70489 (Tehty 29-11-2022)

FishBase intends on removing Makaira mazara in recognition of it as a junior synonym of M. nigricans (Collette et al. 2006); Bray et al. 2006). The IUCN Red List and users on iNaturalist have already followed started to follow suite, as evident here (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1005376).

Note the account for Makaira mazara on FishBase here: (https://www.fishbase.se/summary/218).

Now that any curator can make adjustments to ray-finned fishes (see this flag for more context: https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/505243), I am interested in moving forward with this swap. Any objections? (@clinton, @sascha_schulz, @markmcg, @cdstruthers, @tomtrnski)

Not sure I can add a lot to this discussion. Collette et al. (2006) Bulletin of Marine Science, 79(3): 455-468 found no genetic evidence for separate Indo-Pacific and Atlantic species of blue marlin, and neither did Santini & Sorenson (2013) Italian Journal of Zoology, 80(4): 481-489. Williams et al. (2018) Bulletin of Marine Science 94(1): 73-84 treated Indo-Pacific and Atlantic blue marlin populations as clades within Makaira nigricans Lacépède, 1802.

Despite the genetic evidence Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes entry for Tetrapturus mazara states "Current status: Uncertain as Makaira mazara (Jordan & Snyder 1901). Istiophoridae. Distribution: Tropical and temperate Indo-Pacific [if valid]."

My inclination is to go with the genetic evidence and make the swap.

Supportive of this change. M. nigricans has strong support as the single species throughout distributional range.
