The digital photography revolution, followed by smartphone photography, transformed biological recording. There has been a spectacular increase in the number of biological records. This is fantastic, as long as it does not come at the expense of collecting and storing samples in scientific institutions and studying life under a microscope. Let's do both!

Are you still recording on the Parkland Walk? I'm hoping to bring together a group to carry out a flora survey for 2024 and wondered if you would be interested. All observations would be uploaded to GIGL and would be used to inform a management plan for the nature reserve.

Hi Daniel,

I hope you're well. Just to let you know what's happening. There's a vector outline for Parkland Walk South in inaturalist but it's not accurate. I'm trying to get in touch with the person who originated it so I can update it or replace it. Once that's done it will be a much better representation of what is in the nature reserve rather than people's gardens. I will then get in touch with everyone who is recorded as submitting observations and just ask if they would make a special effort to carry out spotting on the Parkland Walk in 2024. I gather that GiGL does sweep up data from inaturalist although they prefer iRecord. I'm not troubled by that, just so long as data eventually finds its way there. It would be handy if observers were able to send me a spreadsheet at the end of the year of their own findings. Does that seem a reasonable ask?

I can certainly send you a spreadsheet with my findings at the end of the year. Please do remind me when the time comes. It’s worth noting that Research Grade observations from iNaturalist should automatically make their way to iRecord.

Thanks and your point about Research Grade observations is really useful to know. If you are interested I do have the findings of a 2015 flora survey conducted by David Bevan. It was commissioned by the Friends of the Parkland Walk. Drop me an email at simonolley@mac.com if you would like to view it. Data is grouped into a number of vegetation compartments but excludes the area of Parkland Walk that comes under Islington's jurisdiction.
