a mating pair I have been following for the last 4 years.
they use a new nest every year. numbers of chicks have varied, from as little as 1, to as many as 4.
this year and 2 years ago were single chicks, and they both died.
cause of death in the 1st case was deemed to be dehydration. in the 2nd case, the chick was found with trauma to the forehead.
my first encounter with our local owls 4 years ago. 2 days later i observed the same owl with its mate carry out an attack on a woodpecker's nest. I was able to identify it as the male of the pair.
