Found on Fall Creek Trail at Fall Creek Unit/Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park
Or maybe another shelf fungi that was colonized by something else?
Along the Brushy Peaks trail. We would never have paid any attention to them if the brighter part of those fungi was white. But it was pink...
On the exposed root of a
Douglas Fir stump.
Bracket fungus, "Artist's conk."
Growing on a big leaf maple.
I was amazed at the color and fragrance (like fruity chocolate?) of this Fomitopsis cajanderi, and pleased to finally identify it by describing it on Google. Dozens of these were growing on the cut end of three pieces of a large Douglas-fir log. The underside was quite soft and seemed to bruise when I picked it. It provided no visible spore print on white paper or a brown paper bag.
