Sorry for the low quality image, the bird wouldn't stop hopping around. It was kicking up leaf litter I assume to find small insects to eat.
An American crow landed in our small yard, approached a spot, stabbed its bill towards the ground, and jumped back. It repeated this maneuver several times, and I decided to investigate. That’s when I found this juvenile copperhead. I didn’t feel right killing it, although it’s in a very heavily developed suburban neighborhood. I picked it up in a container and tossed it back into the trees. It didn’t appear to be injured by the crow, but couldn’t tell for sure.
