I went on a 30 min nature walk on Saturday around 4 pm. It was the perfect day for a nature walk because it was sunny and 68 degrees outside. I went on my nature walk at Houghton's Garden in Newton. The theme for this week's nature walk is plants. Because it is fall, most of the plants were changing colors and there was so much orange! I thought this theme was easier than fungi because there are so many plants around us. I was surprised how easy it was to find the four kinds of plants. One type of plant I noticed was the Polypodiopsida, also known as seedless vascular plants, like a fern. I actually found multiple different ferns on my walk. Another type of plant I noticed was the Gymnosperms, also known as non-flowering seed plants, like evergreen trees. I found a fir on my walk but a lot of the evergreen trees were hard to capture on camera because they were so large. Another type of plant I found was the Bryophyta, also known as a non-vascular plant, like moss. I found a lot of moss near the ground and where water is more abundant. The last type of plant I found was the Angiosperms, also known as flowering plants. The flowers on these plants were almost always dying, so it was hard to capture on camera. However, I did find some plants with fruits and flowers! This walk was very helpful to identify the four main groups of plants. The locations of the plants connect back to how the plants reproduce and where they thrive. Also, the distribution and amount of each type of plant connects to how successful they are and what adaptations they have, like vascular tissue.
