Challenge 4 - Plant Communities and You

In Ontario, there are dozens of different plant communities, all with their own unique mix of biotic and abiotic components that make up the homes and habitats of other wildlife. These plant communities vary in species type, density, and overall richness.

In our penultimate iNaturalist Challenge, students will take to the field in their teams to explore two different ecosystems with diverse plant communities. This is a great opportunity for teams to polish up their identification skills and finish any outstanding challenges. Students will make observations and identify plant species at each site, taking note of species abundance, and explore why different species occur in different areas.

Teams can use any identification tool available to them, including but not limited to:

  • Guides listed in previous challenges
  • Identification books as provided by teacher
  • Seek by iNaturalist
  • ... and many more!

If you are confident in a plant identification only to the family or genus level, you may post it in the project as such. Please ensure that you take clear photographs so that other naturalists can identify your observations.

Both a Student Guide and Worksheet are available for this challenge on the Coaches Corner - print them off to help in your exploration!

GOAL: As a team, submit at least 14 observations, 7 from each site, to this form. Label your iNaturalist observations in the "notes" field with the site number and name of the ecosystem you found the plant in.
