Taxonomic Swap 129889 (Tehty 01-09-2023)

The genus Prosopis has been broken up into several genera based on robust molecular and morphological evidence. The genera Prosopis, Anonychium, Xerocladia, Neltuma, Indopiptadenia, and Strombocarpa are all distinguishable by fruit and spine characters. Prosopis is now a purely African / Middle Eastern genus and new world species have been moved to Neltuma and Strombocarpa. This is an example of a useful taxon split. In addition to the "robust molecular evidence," it states explicitly that these genera can also be distinguished "by fruit and spine characters." At root, what are genes for, if not to code for phenotypic characters?
